Cascading Style Sheets
Our Mission is to know Jesus as Savior,
to serve him, and to proclaim him.

Jesus is the greatest teacher who ever lived. One of Jesus' techniques was to relate spiritual ideas to common everyday life. Pensamientos (afterthought) is an attempt to follow Jesus' method of teaching. Its title is in Spanish because we recognize the importance of multi-culturalism. We hope to translate some of these messages into Spanish soon.

Cascading Style Sheets

For Christmas I got a book about CSS. CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets. A Cascading Style Sheet is an electronic text document that is used by web pages to give them their distinctive appearance. If you want all the pages in your web site to have the same general appearance, then you link them to the style sheet and presto-chango instant uniformity.

God's word is like a style sheet. One the style sheet he has written the rules that should determine our attitudes and behavior. If we link our life to God's word, the results should be conformity to it. A simple process, if we were machines, but we're not machines. We are complex human beings that can misunderstand or ignore God's word.

On your computer you have a software application that is called a "browser". A browser allows you to view web pages over the internet. Most of you probably use Microsoft's Internet Explorer as your browser. I recently installed a new browser called "Firefox". Let me just say that our church's web pages do not look the same on Firefox as it does on Internet Explorer.1 Firefox is ignoring or misinterpreting some of the code that I wrote for our church web site.

I will have to fine tune our web page to make it accessible to users of Firefox, but God does not rewrite his word. Jesus said that God's word endures forever. So it is up to us to do our best to read and understand God's word correctly. Fortunately, we are much smarter than internet browsers. God has designed us with the capability of reading and understanding his word. He has also given us the ability to believe and obey his word.

God is a great God. Unlike Microsoft he didn't design us with programming flaws, security vulnerabilities and other bugs. Now our responsibility is to download God's word into the browser of our heart and mind. The prophet Jeremiah says the same thing: " "this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days," declares the LORD, "I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people" (Jeremiah 31:33)." Next we must link his word with our attitudes and behavior so that we look the way God wants us to look--in the image of his son Jesus. As God's word says, "He also predestined [us] to become conformed to the image of His Son (Romans 8:29)." So if you surf the web make sure you surf the word. It's the style sheet of all style sheets.

Trying to stay connected,

Pastor Steve
