Need a new connection?

Recently I was out of town at a pastor's conference and needed to make a phone call. The phone in the room had instructions on how to make long distance phone calls. The first step was to dial nine to get an outside line, but when I dialed nine all I received was a busy signal. I called the front desk, and they gave me different instructions. I had to dial three other numbers first and then dial nine to get an outside line. I followed those instructions. That didn't work either. The phone system at the conference center just wouldn't work right, so I went to the lobby and used the pay phone. The pay phone worked, and I was able to make my call.

When we attend church we often are given instructions about how to live a successful Christian life, but sometimes even though we follow the instructions, we just don't seem to connect with God the way we'd like. So we read a book, or attend a seminar, or maybe even attend a different church. Once again we are given new or different instructions. We follow the new instructions hoping that this time we'll be able to connect with God, but again, we don't seem to make any progress in our spiritual life, and God seems just as far away as he was before.

Sometimes I too feel like I'm not connecting with God the way I'd like. Sometimes it seems like my spiritual life isn't going right. When this happens, usually it's because my daily routine isn't on a good line. That line is prayer. Prayer is the line to God that works. You can always connect to God if you pray. Prayer--conversation with God--is what works and it works every time. You won't get a busy signal. You won't get cut off. You won't lose the connection. You won't get dropped. And the best part--it's free. You can freely come to God any time, any place. He is always available, and believe it or not, he is actually waiting and expecting your call. He won't put you on hold, and you won't have to leave a message on an answering machine. Every time you call, God answers. The question is--will you take the time and make the effort to get on your knees, seek God, confess your sins (confession ensures that the line will be clear), and spend time talking with your heavenly Father? The Bible tells us to devote ourselves to prayer (Colossians 4:2) and to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). To be able to pray according to the Bible will take time and effort.

Maybe you've been wondering why your spiritual life seems to be going nowhere. It's possible that you need to open up the lines of communication with God. Renew and refresh your relationship with God by seeking him more and telling him what is happening in your life. He never tires of hearing your voice and his heart is longing to talk with you. Prayer always works.

Getting on the line that works,

Pastor Steve
