Runaway Train
Several years ago I took our Bible club children to Great Adventure. Each child was accompanied by at least one parent or another responsible adult. I noticed that one young boy and his mother were not getting on any of the rides. They were too scared. I thought that I remembered that the Runaway Train was one of the mildest rides so I suggested that we go on the ride together. We waited in the obligatory hour-long line winding our way around the walk way to the sounds of yelling and screaming kids. When we finally got on the Runaway Train, the ride turned out to be much more than I remembered. In fact it was just what they called it a speeding, frightening "Runaway Train". I felt really bad afterwards because the young boy and his mother didn't go on another ride for the rest of the day. Sometimes events in our life can make it seem like we're riding a runaway train. No engineer or conductor, no brakes, and too many terrifying loops, twists, and rolls. Fortunately we are not alone. God is riding in the car with us. He built the track and the cars. He knows all the twists and turns. He promises that even though the ride might seem to be out of control, it's all for the purpose of helping us squeeze his hand tighter. Eventually we overcome our fear, open our eyes, and a sense of relative security comes over us. God says that he will always be with us. He tells us to trust in him with all our heart and not to depend on our own understanding. If we will acknowledge him in all your ways, he will guide and direct us. We can trust God today and everyday to go with us to the end of the ride. We are always riding safely in his care and protection.
