Steve Irwin was smart
Recently we were all saddened by the tragic death of Steve Irwin. You probably saw Steve Irwin on TV as the Crocodile Hunter. He was on location off one of Australia's reefs filming a documentary of the "Ocean's Deadliest" when he was stung in the chest by a sting ray and died. We all admired Irwin because he seemed impervious to the hazards posed by dangerous animals. He was renowned for jumping on the backs of huge crocodiles and handling poisonous snakes. In my opinion he did not appear to be the kind of thrill seeker who took unnecessary risks for the sake of impertinent excitement. Irwin enjoyed getting close to dangerous creatures because he cared about their survival and had in-depth knowledge about the animals and the dangers they posed. Most of us would never dream of getting close to a crocodile or poisonous snakes. We know that they pose a real threat to our lives. But many of us get much too close to that old serpent the devil. We think that we are not affected by worldly activities. We act as if we are immune to the harmful effects of watching the kind of indecency often portrayed in movies or television shows. Some Christians think that they can skip their Bible reading and prayer time with no bad consequences. Some Christians even believe that they will be none the worse for skipping Sunday church service. We should never risk getting too close to sin or Satan. The accident that took Irwin's life was not because he was playing with danger. The sting ray was hidden in the sand and Irwin didn't realize that he was on top of the sting ray until it was too late. Steve Irwin was smart. He understood the dangers of the animals with which he worked. We too need to understand that Satan is one creature who is far too crafty and treacherous to get close to. We need to remember that Satan is always waiting to destroy us if we are not careful. The Bible says, "Be careful, your enemy the devil is sneaking around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in the faith."
