Pensamientos para hoy (afterthought for today)

exploding batteries

When I was kid I witnessed a car battery explosion. Three young men were looking under the hood of a car when suddenly the battery exploded. One of the men got acid in his face. Fortunately a water faucet was near by and they quickly washed his face with water. I don't know how serious his injuries were or if he suffered any permanent injury, but it looked frightening. His friends were so shook up that they were barely able to think straight. Since then I've learned that these kinds of accidents, though not common, do occur frequently.

These lead-acid battery explosions are caused by the build up of hydrogen gas inside the battery. Especially if the level of sulfuric acid is too low, a dangerous amount of hydrogen gas can build up inside the battery. Explosions can occur because of too much pressure or because the mixture of hydrogen-oxygen gas is ignited by a spark. These explosions can happen when trying to recharge or jump start a car battery.

The way to prevent these types of explosions is to keep the batteries clean and properly filled. When the battery is properly filled, it's less likely that a dangerous level of hydrogen gas will form in the empty space. Also if the battery is kept clean the hydrogen gas can escape through the vents at the top of the battery preventing dangerous buildups.

In life we can prevent emotional explosions by properly maintaining our spiritual "batteries". Emotional explosions can occur if the amount of our emotional and/or spiritual vitality is too low. In this spiritual vacuum, dangerous levels of negative emotions can build up in our life. We need to keep our heart filled with the proper amount of positive emotions like love, peace, joy, gentleness, kindness, and forgiveness. When our heart is filled with these positive emotions, then there isn't room for dangerous, negative emotions like hate, worry, depression, harshness, cruelty, and intolerance. We need also to keep our lives clean. We can't let impurities build up in our life and create a potentially dangerous explosive condition.

To prevent these dangerous emotional/spiritual explosions we need to follow the instructions found in the Bible. The Bible says, "If we confess our sins, [God] is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness." And we need to "be filled with the Spirit" so that we can produce the fruit of the Spirit which is "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, [and] self-control" (see 1 John 1:9; Ephesians 5:18 and Galatians 5:16-23).1

If you haven't recently checked under the hood of your life, then maybe it's time to look inside and see what's happening. As King Solomon said, "Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life (Proverbs 4:23)."

Keeping my spiritual batteries cleaned and filled,
