Satisfaction

Most of us who grew up during the sixties and seventies remember the song "Can't Get No Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones. Actually Mick Jagger should have said, "I can't get any satisfaction" or "I get no satisfaction." To say, "I can't get no satisfaction" is to state a double negative which in English means "I get satisfaction." In spite of the poor English we all got Jagger's message: "Life does not result in constant gratification, pleasure, or happiness." The truth that we learn all too soon is that life is a lot of hard work. When Adam sinned he brought a curse into the world that can often make life a real drag. But is this God's plan for our lives? Originally God planned work to be an important and positive aspect of our life. God first arranged for Adam to work in the garden even before he sinned. In Genesis chapter two we read: "Then the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it (Genesis 2:15)." 1 Unfortunately, when Adam sinned corruption entered the world. This corruption has affected our work life so that we often do not experience the joy of work and the satisfaction of a job well done. When we come to God through faith in Jesus some, but not all, of the effects of sin are nullified. Jesus' work of redemption will ultimately reverse the effects of sin, but not until the day when God creates a new heaven and a new earth. The apostle Paul said,
I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body (Romans 8:18-23).

So when you feel the effects of corruption in the work place remember that a better day is coming. And with this truth firmly planted in our minds God will help us to face each day with joy and confidence knowing that some day we will arrive at a place where we will get satisfaction. We will never find true satisfaction in this life, but God promises that we will find satisfaction in heaven that will far outshine anything this world has to offer.

Working Hard,

Pastor Steve
