The Pneumatologist
I've been putting off going to the doctor. I usually go every January, but last January (2007) I didn't go. One reason why I didn't go is because my doctor no longer participates in my insurance plan; so I have to find another doctor. That's OK. I knew that he'd tell me to lose weight and do something about my cholesterol and high blood pressure. Maybe I'll get to a doctor this year. Having a primary physician is important. Usually a primary physician is a general practitioner--a doctor who has a general knowledge of medicine. He or she does not specialize in any particular field of medicine. A doctor like this is fine for giving us our yearly physical checkups and for treating common medical issues. But sometimes we have a problem for which our regular doctor is not trained, in these cases he needs to send us to a specialist. He might send us to a cardiologist or urologist or a pulmonary doctor. But sometimes what we really need is to see the Pneumatologist† . The Pneumatologist is an expert in diagnosing spiritual issues. He has sensitive instruments that can probe our inner person to check our spiritual health. Unfortunately many people don't like going to the Pneumatologist because they don't want to hear what he's going to tell them. Just like I've put off going to the doctor because I know he'll tell me to lose weight, some people don't want to go to the Pneumatologist because they know that He's going to tell them to make a change in their attitude and/or lifestyle. I can't keep putting off going to the doctor. Regular checkups are essential to help prevent sickness, and if I do have a health problem, the doctor can hopefully catch it early so that the problem can be treated before it gets worse. Early detection of a disease can sometimes save our life. The same is true about going to the Pneumatologist. A visit to the spiritual specialist can help us prevent spiritual disease and catch spiritual problems before they get out of control. So even though we know that He'll tell us to put off the weight and the sin that trips us up and that we need to keep our eyes on Jesus as we continue to run the race of life (see the letter to the Hebrews, chapter twelve, verses one and two), we should not put off going to see God's Spiritual Specialist, the Pneumatologist. Oh yea, and don't be afraid of the logoscope‡ . It's a device that the Doctor uses to probe your inner person to show you what's happening inside. Trying to keep my appointments, Pastor Steve January 25, 2008Footnotes † Pneuma is the Greek word for "spirit", "wind" ‡ Logos is the Greek word for: "message", "word".
