Pensamientos para hoy (afterthought for today)
tools of the trade
Man has always used tools to improve his life. The early Native Americans used stone tipped spears and arrows to hunt. They used the leather from these animals for clothes and blankets. They used small pieces of bone to sew the pieces of leather together. They used materials that were present and available in their environment. God too has his tools. God uses creation to teach us that we are not alone in this universe. God uses the splendor and grandeur of nature to teach us how small we are and yet how great, awesome, and creative he is. God uses our conscience to tell us when we have done something wrong. He uses the deep longing of our heart--that inescapable feeling of spiritual emptiness--to show us that we can fill that void only with his divine presence. Today we no longer use stone tools we use computers. Today God primarily uses his word, but in time past God's word was not complete. As far as we know Abraham had no written word of God. Not until Moses did God begin to inscripturate his word. His earlier tools were sufficient to fulfill his purposes for the time. We might not ever feel the need to go back to using stone tools, but God still uses his earlier tools. They are not in themselves sufficient to communicate to us his will for our lives but they are important complements to his word and the personal work of his Spirit. Take time this week to meditate upon God in his word but also try to re-acquaint yourself with God though the splendor of his creation. Take a walk in the park. Find a place where you can see a star-filled sky. Get in touch with that still small voice of your God-given conscience and the witness of his Spirit.
